What is Form 5500 data?
Form 5500 is an annual employee-benefit plan filing. It is useful for plan facts and historical reporting, but a filing is not a current company profile: names, addresses, brokers, carriers, and employee counts can change between filings.
How filing fields map to the API
| Hillwinds field | Typical filing source | Hillwinds treatment |
|---|---|---|
ein | Sponsor EIN | Used as the stable company identifier when available |
company_name | Sponsor name | Normalized and matched to the company profile |
participants | Plan participant counts | Stored by filing year and surfaced as a current measure |
total_premiums | Schedule A premium amounts | Aggregated and normalized across relevant plans |
assets_401k | Plan asset values | Normalized for analysis and year-over-year comparison |
renewal_date | Plan-year dates | Derived when the source supports a reliable renewal window |
Filing data versus proprietary data
| Data | Form 5500 filing | Hillwinds enrichment |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Annual and delayed | Continuously normalized as supported sources change |
| Company identity | Sponsor record | Canonical company, domain, industry, and firmographics |
| Broker and carrier | May appear in schedules | Resolved entities, relationships, tenure, and change signals |
| People | Not a contact database | Benefits decision makers and broker personnel |
| Signals | Requires comparing filings | Derived carrier, broker, growth, and renewal signals |
